Life at BetaAt Beta, there's a whole lot more going on than just school work, though we do quite a bit of that as well. As the MIT mantra goes: Work hard, play hard. The information here should give you an idea of what we do with our time here at MIT.
AthleticsAthletics are a fun and exciting part of life at Beta Theta Pi. Nearly every brother takes part in intramural sports to some degree. We compete at many levels, from recreational to competitive, depending on our house's desire. This year we fielded teams in basketball, soccer, bowling, hockey, softball, volleyball, and ultimate frisbee. Essentially, if any brother is interested in a sport, we put together a team. In past years we have had teams in football, badminton, pool, and water polo. Betas can also be found on several MIT Varsity teams including sailing, crew, swimming, diving, football and baseball.
The brothers at Beta Theta Pi are especially proud of our two most recent athletic achievements. We placed first in A-League bowling, as well as had one of our very own earn MVP honors. In addition, we won the B-League basketball tournament and had a perfect 12-0 season. In fact, our team the Beta Ballers has a combined 25-3 record over the past three years and is proud to have the best team out of all of the fraternities and independent living groups. Not only does Beta sport drawn crowds of enthusiastic fans, but it has also strengthened our brotherhood and given our pledges a sense of Beta pride. It is also a great way to get rid of some stress and take a break from work. CommunityBeta brothers remain active in the community, in spite of MIT's best efforts to wick away our will to give. As a house, we have volunteered our time binding books at the National Braille Press, collecting clothing and canned food, and we are even fielding a team in this year's Walk for Hunger on May 2 (if you would like to donate money to our team, please visit our team page). In addition to events that involve the whole house, many Betas are involved in community service as individuals, and not just because of judges' orders. Several of us are involved in Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, while others give their time working with organizations like People Making a Difference and MIT ProjectSERVE. Whether cooking lunch at a soup kitchen, or just shoveling the walk of one of our elderly neighbors on Bay State Rd., Betas aren't afraid to use their time and energy to make our community a better place. Stop by the house sometime, and find out more about what we do.
